Abu Dhabi, Sept 27th, 2015: He Named Me Malala, an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, will make its Middle Eastern debut on October 15, the closing night of the prestigious Beirut International Film festival.
The film, directed by Academy Award® winner Davis Guggenheim, gives us an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl’s life – from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education, to her impassioned speeches at the UN, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers.
He Named Me Malala is being released by Fox Searchlight Pictures, in association with Image Nation Abu Dhabi, Participant Media and National Geographic Channel and is being distributed by Empire International.The documentary was produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald under their long-term partnership with Image Nation, and also produced by director Davis Guggenheim.

There was an international outcry when, aged just 15, Malala was shot and seriously wounded by a Taliban gunman when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. Now aged 18, Malala is a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally, as co-founder of the Malala Fund. In December 2014, Malala became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
Garin added that the film carries an important message for the region.

The film will be accompanied internationally by a social action campaign ‘Stand #withMalala’. The multi-platform campaign will invite people everywhere to take part in a range of activities from pledging support online to hosting screenings to signing petitions focused on funding, protecting and measuring girls’ education. As part of this there will be a discount for schools wishing to bring students to see the film and learning materials provided for further discussion in the classroom.

Earlier this month, the film was screened internationally at Telluride and Toronto film festivals where it was met with standing ovations and just last week film enjoyed its US premiere in New York, where it received rave reviews. It opens in US cinemas on Oct 2nd and in the UAE and across the Middle East on November 5th.
