FAQs

I don’t have a professional camera, can I still apply?

Yes – we don’t expect your one minute long entry to be of Hollywood standard. You can film your entry on any camera, even on your phone.

I don’t live in the UAE, can I still enter?

AFS Narrative, Documentary and Scriptwriting are open to UAE nationals and residents (proof of residency visa required). If you are from a GCC country and you can spend the whole duration of the program in Abu Dhabi, you are welcome to apply. AFS Young Filmmakers is open to UAE National only.

I don’t have any professional filmmaking experience. is this a problem?

Our narrative competition is based on creativity alone so not previous experience is required. For AFS documentary, you are required to have some background in filming. For AFS Scriptwriting we require you have written a script for a short film that has been produced.

I have been accepted but I don’t live in Abu Dhabi – how will I attend the programs?

We will provide you with hotel accommodation in Abu Dhabi and travel during the workshop stages for AFS Narrative, AFS Documentary, AFS Scriptwriting and AFS Mawaheb.

Can I submit a script written by someone else to AFS Narrative or AFS Scriptwriting?

All works submitted to AFS must be a wholly original work of the Entrant;

What if I write it with someone else? Can teams apply?

We only accept one participant per submission. Team works won’t be considered.

I am a minor, can I apply?

Yes, you will need written consent from your parents/ guardians upon acceptance to the program.

My visa is under process, can I still apply?

Yes, but you’ll need a full valid visa upon commencement of the program, otherwise the offer to participate will be forfeited.
